Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved no match against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
