Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
