Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
